Te Araroa, Te Wai Pounamu via pencil

Te Araroa takes you 3000 kilometres from Cape Reinga to Bluff.

In the summer of 2022, Jacob Paterson walked the South Island leg - 1400km in 60 days and drew a drawing each day.

These are those drawings.

Day 02

Dog was going to sleep inside the hut with

his owner until Beth and I showed up and he

got kicked to the woodshed.

A little guilty.

Day 25:

Unnamed Peak 1126 coming out of

Lake Coleridge. Mum drove in from

Christchurch to pick me up and save me a

day of road walking.

Day 01:

Beth, my sister and humble lizard washerwoman,

washing our dishes by the creek on day 1. We planned on

walking the whole TA together but she had a knee injury over

the Richmond Ranges and we had to hitch back to

Christchurch for her to recover for a few weeks.

We were both very bummed not to walk together.

Day 51

School’s out for summer and dad (a science

teacher) joins for the last two weeks of the

journey. Dad took us into the mountains every

school holiday from the ages 4-14, as a kid we

complained lots and he often ended up carrying

mine or my sister’s bag.
